Launch of Durban's Metropolitan State of the Environment and Development Pilot Report for the year 1999

The Durban Metro Pilot State of the Environment and Development: 1999 was approved by the Durban Metropolitan Economic Development and Planning Committee on 14 February 2000. The report which is a Phase 3 project within Durban's Local Agenda 21 programme gives an overview of the human induced impact on the environment, indicates recent trends and the current state of the environment, as well as society's response to the urban environmental problems. It also provides information on what you can do to improve the environmental condition.

The report is a pilot study and provides information on the following sectors: Air, Terrestrial Resources, Marine Resources, Fresh Water Resources, Waste, Cultural Resources, Noise, Crime, Population, Climate, Economy, Transportation, Local Agenda 21. The report is not a complete State of the Environment (SoE) report but was undertaken with the main aim of testing the tools and software being created in the CEROI project in terms of their sustainability as a standardised framework for SoE reporting in Durban. A complete SoE will be undertaken once the Unicity (new metropolitan area) boundary has been finalised and associated environmental management structures put in place.
